School Library Journal

ea. vol: 32p. diags. photogs. chron. glossary. index. Watts. 1986. PSS $10.50. Gr 3-6 Most of the information presented here is probably already in most libraries; however, the attractive oversize layouts of the books, along with the full-color photographs, make these books worth considering. The best features of the books are the clear, easy-to-understand color diagrams that illustrate and help explain important concepts. Ships and Submarines outlines some of the important changes that have taken place in marine technology during the last 20 years. A variety of topics is covered, including design, propulsion, navigation, ports, container ships, passenger ships, warships, submarines and special ships. Motorcycles examines aspects of motor construction and design, including engine, drive train, wheels, brakes, suspension and frames, as well as types of bikes and the future of motorcycles. Both books have a date chart, a very short glossary (10 entries) and tiny (56-entry) index. Children will enjoy reading these booksthey are bright, colorful, well laid out, and not ``too long. ''Don Reaber, Meadowdale High School, Lynnwood, Wash.
