If you know youngsters who are interested in geography, this is the book for them. The text efficiently and lucidly introduces the major topics associated with geography such as rocks and minerals, volcanoes, erosion and weathering, and faults and earthquakes. Each topic is brought to life with illustrations, diagrams, real-life photographs and hands-on activities. These stellar activities will help beginning geologists develop their understanding of ideas that otherwise might be difficult to comprehend. To increase the likelihood of interactivity, simple household and stationery goods are all that the projects require. For example, to shed light on the idea of why rain doesn't fall on the lee side of a mountain, the author suggests actually going out in the rain and placing three jars at different distances from a wall. The one closest to the wall will collect the least amount of water, just as the lee side of a mountain experiences little rain. Such connections between the experiments' outcomes and larger concepts are drawn for the reader. A wonderfully designed introductory section presents the book's general format, and a helpful index reinforces the vocabulary used in the book.
