Synopsis

Rosie loves everything to be pretty and organized, so when she's finally allowed to get her own dog, she chooses an adorable, precious little poodle. But when it turns out her princess would rather get messy than sit on a fancy pillow, will Rosie be able to handle the mischievous pup?

Children's Literature

Part of the "Pet Trouble" series, this is a fun look at a family and a puppy adjusting to each other. Ten-year-old Rosie Sanchez competes with her four older brothers for the right to pick the breed of their new dog. After she wins, she chooses a toy poodle. After attempting to dress the puppy in doll clothes and paint her nails pink, Rosie learns to treat the dog as a dog rather than an extension of her girly self. This is good since one of the dog's favorite activities is rolling in mud. Her brothers and all their friends learn to love the dog, too. And Rosie learns that her brothers really do love her. The reader learns about several breeds of dog through a clever selection process. Touches of economics (involving a bake sale) and fashion (Mom's job is at a boutique) are also thrown in. The author does an excellent job of describing the puppy's behavior and appearance. Reviewer: Sue Poduska
