Overview
Faingold (Spanish and linguistics, U. of Tulsa) is a native or near- native speaker of four languages—Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew, and English. In this unique case study, he traces the acquisition, loss, and re-acquisition of these four languages in his son, Noam, from birth to age 17, and compares the subject's experiences with that of other children studied by the author and others. This research reveals linguistic, cognitive, psychological, and social mechanisms of language acquisition, loss, and re-emergence at play during the child's increasing, decreasing, and, in turn, increasing proficiency in four languages. The text combines an introduction and concluding summary with five essays previously published between 1990 and 2001. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, ORBook Details
