Reviewer: Jerry Frazier, PharmD(Premier Health Alliance)
Description: This book provides a broad overview of the elements of pharmaceutical discovery, development, and marketing within a pharmaceutical company. Internal and external interactions and relationships are highlighted along with a few examples of international operations and development.
Purpose: The purpose is to help new and experienced persons in the pharmaceutical industry work more effectively and better understand other areas of the company. It will also benefit those outside the industry to understand the operations and issues of a pharmaceutical company. This second edition features 35 new chapters as well as extensive additions to existing chapters.
Audience: This book is intended for pharmaceutical industry executives with nonscientific backgrounds and scientists, clinicians, and market specialists who seek a broader view of the industry. The book will be useful for professionals outside the industry who desire a broad overview.
Features: The book offers extensive black-and-white illustrations (tables and figures) and useful appendixes and indexes that greatly enhance the reading. There is a small number of fairly current references and a bibliography of selected texts. The relative lack of references is really not a problem because the intent of the author is to provide mostly general, practical knowledge. The book is divided into eight logical sections, and each chapter is preceded by an extensive table of contents. The overall appearance is excellent.
Assessment: This book will provide a good introduction to the industry for new employees of a pharmaceutical company, providing them with some guidance in their work area as well as extensive information about the other areas of the company. It will also serve as a useful overview for those outside the industry who seek knowledge about the operations and issues facing a pharmaceutical company.

This revised and expanded text (the first edition of 1989 was titled Multinational Drug Companies) describes the principles and practices operating in multinational pharmaceutical companies. In addition to adding new material to the existing chapters, 35 new chapters have either been integrated into the five original sections of the text (corporate organization and management issues, medicine discovery and development, research and development organization and management issues, technical and functional issues and activities, and external interactions and relationships), or into the three new sections (overview of a pharmaceutical company and the industry, the medical-marketing interface, and major corporate issues and challenges).
