Laughter is a balm for many an ill, even those induced at the keyboard. Russell uses humor to make several basic points--save often, make backups, don't use arcane commands, and remember that you're always smarter than the machine (as long as you're not in a rush). Murphy's Laws of DOS is dotted with laws, pronouncements, rules, and maxims that are both funny and accurate, such as ``the computer only crashes when printing a document you haven't saved.'' This laugh track has five parts, starting with the basics of DOS, running through hardware and software essentials, and, finally, ending with a variety of solutions (in the form of programs and commands). Russell admits that you won't find all the answers you're looking for in his text and seriously advises you on ``how to cultivate a nerd'' for on-the-spot aid. The volume is designed for manual problem solving, with a detailed index and well-designed pages, but it also works as a hilarious page turner.
