School Library Journal

Gr 3-5 An excellent combination of black-and-white photographs and lucid text make Mushrooms an outstanding nonfiction essay. Touching upon the mystery and magic of mushrooms, Selsam gives a brief chronicle of the mushroom's role throughout the ages. The structure of the mushroom is documented and how one type of mushroom is grown and harvested is detailed. A few different kinds of mushrooms are listed, again with clear photographic examples. A warning not to eat unidentified mushrooms is given to would-be mushroom hunters. Easy chapter divisions and a thorough index make this a straightforward reference book easy for young readers to utilize. Barbara Peklo Serling, Oneida City Schs . , N.Y.
