Overview

Love, a Benedictine monk in Ireland, offers an anthropological, philosophical, and ritual study of music, particularly as it relates to the Christian tradition. His argument moves from musicology through philosophy, into Christian theology, so readers with the various orientations can find material of interest. He finds that improvisatory music, a human phenomenon in the widest sense, now carries a negative charge in the cultural environment of the modern west, and is destined to suffer relative decline. In the work of Heidegger, he identifies trends that favor the idea of music as a central component in philosophical discourse. The text is double spaced.
