Synopsis

For a little boy my brother Bernard has some big ideas. On Summer Project he was only interested in doing one thing:—Clothes Design—even though the other kids would call him Bernadette forever.

Marilyn Courtot - Children's Literature

There are several issues intertwined in this chapter book how to deal with bullies and teasing, and how to be true to yourself and your own strengths and desires. Bernard is not thrilled with the idea of going to summer camp. His sister is and she assures him that she will look out for him and help him have fun. Early on, Bernard tangles with the bully Big Dan and earns the hated nickname Burnadette. Eventually he finds a safe haven in the clothing design class. It seems that Bernard's grandmother has taught him some basics about sewing, and he has a flair for design. Pretty soon he creates a jacket, draws an admiring crowd and lets these kids know that his name is Bernard. The best part is Bernard's revenge on Big Dan when he designs the costumes for the end-of-camp play. It is sweet and kids will be happy to see that brains and skillful fingers can overcome the bully's brawn. The illustrations, in full color, are peppered throughout, and they add plenty of humor to the story. 2002 (orig. 1995), Crabtree Publishing Company,
