About the Author, Richard Rodgers

Richard Rodgers (composer 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Their first musical, Oklahoma!, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers' sophisticated style of musical comedy with Hammerstein's innovations in opera. Oklahoma! was followed by Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music, among others. Collectively the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals earned thirty-four Tony Awards, fifteen Academy Awards, two Pulitzer Prizes, two Grammy Awards, and an Emmy Award.

Each two-page spread of this large format picture book illustrates a couplet from the celebrated song created by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. The book's jacket, which resembles the artwork of Joan Walsh Anglund with its small characters surrounding the title and larger central picture, are poor preparation for the visual vignettes found within. Using a style reminiscent of the artwork of the "Little House on the Prairie" books and products that she has also illustrated, Renée Graef has brought new life to the famous song lyrics. Bright copper kettles pour hot drinks for teddy bears and kittens. Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes are on stage rehearsing the spring dance recital. And cream-colored toy ponies get fed tiny pretend bites of crisp apple strudel by a loving mistress. All the favorite things in this pretty picture book get loving treatment from a talented illustrator. The settings are old-fashioned with nary a television, car, or computer to be seen. Spreads show two children enjoying their favorite things such as "Silver white winters that melt into springs." Their mother is there to comfort "When the dog bites,/When the bee stings." The piano music and words are included.
