Children's Literature

Emergent literacy is a popular topic in children's literature today, and the demand for books and series that will help children learn to read has led to a wealth of new material specializing in phonics. My Little Pony: Phonics Fun is a series of twelve short books that focus on introducing the short vowel sounds a, e, i, o and u. The accompanying letter to parents explains that, in order to learn how to read, children must be motivated, and that choosing books with your children's favorite characters will help motivate children to read these books, first with parental assistance and eventually on their own. The plots of the books may not hold up to repeated reading—the focus, after all, is on phonological development rather than a solid storyline—but the bright pink books with colorful ponies are sure to appeal to young readers. This series would be a good purchase for libraries and individuals looking to expand their collection; however Curious George: Curious about Phonics may be a better choice, since the parent's guide to phonological development with that book is more explicit, detailed, and easier to follow.
