Editorials

School Library Journal

Gr 3-7-From the hardy little Shetland to the more elegant Connemara, the world of the pony comes alive in this detail-filled volume. The author provides succinct, accurate information about the various breeds, their physical characteristics, history, and behavior. Ponies in the wild, the ideal pony, health, and tack are discussed on double-page spreads. Excellent full-color photographs illuminate the text, making this a fine book to browse through or turn to when looking for specific advice such as how to muck out a stall or groom a pony for a show. The importance of riding safely is stressed. The Visual Dictionary of the Horse (1993) covers some of the same material dealing with the care, feeding, and riding of these animals. The comprehensive, detailed The Encyclopedia of the Horse (1994, both DK) has double-page spreads on various breeds and also addresses horse care and equestrian activities. However, for young people who have a pony, this briefer, heavily illustrated introduction will be informative and fun to read. It may even help them to become their pony's best friend. A must-purchase for the pony set or where informational books on equines are popular.-Carol Schene, Taunton Public Schools, MA
