Synopsis

Meet Jack! Taking care of a pony is fun, but it's a lot of work, too.Readers can follow along as Lacy grooms her pony, Jack—from brushing his coat and tail to cleaning his hooves. This simple story with irresistible illustrations showing lots of visual clues is perfect for children just learning to read on their own. A picture glossary of terms is included.

Marilyn Courtot - Children's Literature

Many kids dream of having their own pony. The fun of riding and the opportunity to stroke the neck of such an attractive animal hold a lot of appeal. Of course, unless you live on a ranch or farm, having your own pony is not practical. Yes, you can board one, but that is probably beyond the means of most families. There is another side to having a pet pony and, like other pets, a pony needs a lot of care. The girl in the story demonstrates the necessary grooming and feeding of her pet. What is missing is the mucking out of the stable, another important and not so pleasant chore. The pictures are uncluttered and clearly show what the young girl is doing. I also liked that the barn was yellow and not red--a strike for individuality here. The closing page contains a mini-glossary entitled "Pony Words." A Level 1 book in the "Viking Easy-To-Read" series. 2005, Viking/Penguin, Ages 5 to 7.
