The question and answer format of this book may appeal to the older end of the publisher's recommended reading level of this series, but I question the appeal of photographs of train cars for newborns. On each left page, a statement, "This car carries many boxes of freight" is made. Then the reader is asked "What is it called?" and in large letters followed by an explanation point, the answer--A boxcar!--is given on the facing page. The photographs are detailed, colorful and authentic. Two labels on each picture point out details such as the roof walk and outlet gate on the covered hopper car. Other cars pictured are a locomotive, a tank car, a flatcar, and a refrigerated car. The Smithsonian Institution helped create this series, which includes My Big Machine Book and The Airplane Book.
