Synopsis
This illustrated guide to the nano exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (which ended September 1, 2004) offers scholarship on the union of nanotechnology and culture. Hayles (English, design arts, U. of California, Los Angeles) introduces nanotechnology and nanoscience as involving materials on a scale where single atoms/molecules are manipulated. Transdisciplinary scholars address issues relating to the fuzzy boundary between the mechanical and biological aspects of the micro-events represented by these images, and how museums exhibit them. Science fiction and other media are mined for metaphors to treat these new hybrid realities. The book is not indexed. Distributed by ISBS. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
