Overview

Now that she's a Christian, Nikki is ready for a change. So why does everything still seem the same?

Oh, Lord…

How do I always get myself into such messes?

I came to Southern California with Aunt Marta to escape…you know, sightsee, sunbathe, and get my life in order for once. But nothing is going according to plan…

Take MacKenzie, for instance. She's the one I help at the conference…supposedly help, I should say, since I've managed to bungle every job she's given me to do. How can I tell her about You when she thinks I'm an absolute idiot?

Then there's Antonio, who made me promise not to say a word about him to anyone. But he's in big trouble, and I've got to find him…warn him…

Do You think You could help me out here?!

When Nikki gave her hear to the Lord three weeks ago, she was certain her life would turn around for the better. But now, well…she's not so sure. Does God truly care about—and forgive—her? Or, maybe MacKenzie is right. Perhaps it was just an emotional experience, after all.

While visiting Southern California with her aunt, Nikki's newly acquired Christian faith is tested by an illegal alien who seems to be involved in drug smuggling, and an arrogant girl who looks down on everything Nikki does.

Library Journal

The third book in the Nikki Sheridan series (following Mysterious Love, Focus on the Family, 1996) brings readers up to date on a teenager with some very adult problems. An unplanned pregnancy during Nikki's junior year in high school resulted in her boyfriend's abandonment of her and her decision to give up her baby for adoption, a choice she still finds difficult to accept. A newfound belief in God gives Nikki some comfort, though she often finds people, especially those her own age, uncomfortable with her Christianity. To give her a break from her troubled life, Nikki's aunt Marta invites her to California, where she finds herself drawn into the lives of a teenaged illegal immigrant named Antonio and his little sister Marianna. While some readers may be turned off by the teenagers as lead characters, the suspense is solid. The novel may find its widest audience in the YA section of the library.
