Synopsis

For upper-level undergraduates and graduate students in tourism and related programs, an overview of nature-based tourism development in isolated alpine, forest, sub-polar, island, coastal, and marine environments, where eco-tourism, adventure tours, and other forms of nature tourism can be a catalyst for larger regional development. The text takes the view that human capital (professional skill, training, individual knowledge, education) and social capital (subjects' ability to coordinate their own actions and choices in view of common goals) are critical requirements for sustainable nature-based tourism—they are not the consequences of development, but its prerequisite. The editors teach tourism at the U. of Otago, New Zealand, and U. of Ulster, Northern Ireland. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
