From The Critics
Reviewer: E. Quinn Regan, MD(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)Description: This is a short book describing the anatomy, etiology, and treatment options for patients with neck and shoulder complaints.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an overview to two very complex patient management problems. It also reminds the reader that both shoulder and neck causes of symptoms need to be adequately evaluated.
Audience: The audience is general practitioners, emergency medicine physicians, family practice physicians, residents-in-training in both orthopedics and neurosurgery, and any physicians who will treat shoulder and neck complaints.
Features: The book presents a very experienced clinician's perspective and approach to treat various disorders of the neck and shoulder. The detail is appropriate for the subjects covered in a book of this length.
Assessment: The authors present an excellent approach to patients with complaints of pain in the neck and shoulder. They begin with an adequate anatomical review of the shoulder and neck. The authors concentrate on degenerative disorders, but also review acute injuries, including spine fractures and shoulder trauma. The treatments of these injuries are appropriately brief, as appropriate for the audience and the length of the book. I would strongly recommend this book as an introduction to physicians studying patients with shoulder and neck pain.

Focuses on the symptom complexes that arise from the two most common causes of pain in the shoulder: degenerative changes in the soft tissues around the glenohumeral joint and cervical disc degeneration. Also includes some coverage of obscure causes of pain. Principles of common operative procedures are briefly described as a guide for informing patients of the purpose of proposed surgery and for physical therapists working in postoperative rehabilitation.
