Overview
Negotiating Cultures is a collection of essays and interviews that examines the role of cultural fusion, negotiation, and conflict in Eugenio Barba's creative work, research, and theories about theatrical performance. Barba, one of Europe's leading theatre artists, researchers, and theorists, has been at the cutting edge of the contemporary preoccupation with what Homi Bhabha calls the borders between cultures.Synopsis
Eugenio Barba conducted influential cross-cultural research into performance at the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA), which he founded in 1979. Watson (visual and performing arts, Rutgers U.) presents 16 articles exploring issues of cultural exchange and interchange raised by Barba's work. The writings of academics and theater practitioners are included in discussions of the impact of the ISTA and its theoretical outlook, examinations of performance as a kind of cultural barter, and the legacy of Barba's work in Latin America. Also included is an email interview conducted with Barba by Watson. Distributed by Palgrave. Annotation c. Book News, Inc.,Portland, OR
