Library Journal
This detailed bibliography is an extension of Nelson Algren: a checklist , compiled by Kenneth G. McCollum (1973). It brings the history of Algren's career up to date, including information on his final novel, The Devil's Stocking , published in 1983. Algren wrote five novels in addition to short stories, essays, and poems, and is best known as a Chicago writer and a champion of the proletariat; he also spent 48 years writing for newspapers and magazines. Bruccoli's bibliography is especially useful in documenting Algren's prolific journalistic career as well as offering a publishing history of his individual works.
