School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up-These slim volumes offer a great deal of information about each of these individuals. Along with their peacemaking work, each book details their early lives and challenges faced, as well as their successes. Black-and-white and full-color photos add interest to the writing. The books would serve as good overviews, but students looking for more complete information will need to consult other sources. One troubling omission is the lack of mention of Roosevelt's long-term friend and companion Lorena Hickock. The author talks at length about how, especially after her discovery of FDR's affair, the first lady never felt connected to anyone. Regardless of how one defines Roosevelt and Hickock's relationship, it was an established fact that they felt deeply connected to one another. Middle grade and lower-level high school readers will find these books good introductions to these important world leaders.-Lynn Evarts, Sauk Prairie High School, Prairie du Sac, WI Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
