Overview
In this edited volume fourteen scholars, mostly from Latin America, analyze the current state of relations between North America and Latin America in a number of sectors—economic, security, politics, and the environment. Particular attention is paid to processes of economic integration that dominated political discussions during the decade of the 1990s – North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), MERCOSUR, the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas (FTAA). Because most of the scholars are from Latin America, the book has a perspective that is often lacking in books on similar scholars written almost exclusively by scholars from the U.S.
Synopsis
Giving the lie to the idea that all opponents of neoliberal globalization are uninformed students from developed nations, Prevost (political science, St. John's U., US) and Campos (director, Association for Our Havana, Cuba) present 12 articles, penned primarily by Latin American scholars, that analyze neoliberal strategies and resistance to them at the hemispheric and regional levels. The articles explore the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas as being an extension of the Monroe Doctrine, explore the impact of neoliberal policies on wealth gaps in a number of countries, and look at Latin American foreign and economic policies.
