Overview

A full-color guide to understanding, evaluating, and treating heart disease in fetuses and newborns

4 STAR DOODY'S REVIEW!
"The illustrations are superb, with many full-color presentations and very clear radiographs and echocardiographic images....This is a well-written and concise book which has been needed to update the first edition published nearly a decade ago. It is well suited for the advanced trainee to use clinically and prepare for board exams.... it presents the essentials in a very readable and beautifully illustrated manner."--Doody's Review Service

Neonatal Cardiology is the trusted go-to guide for pediatricians and neonatologists needing concise, practical guidance on the evaluation and management of newborns with heart disease and other cardiac functional abnormalities. Focusing on physiology, mechanics, and presentation of congenital heart disease, this full-color resource provides a succinct, yet complete overview of neonatal cardiology.

Neonatal Cardiology opens with discussions of basic aspects of embryology of the heart and a review of normal and abnormal muscle function. From there, you are led through the clinical assessment of patients with an array of cardiac abnormalities. Management and treatment follow, beginning with a basic chapter on the principles of medical management, followed by drug therapy and post-operative care. The book concludes with a chapter on Epidemiology, Etiology, and Genetics of Congenital Heart Disease.

Features:

  • Full-color presentation with new radiographic images and explanatory illustrations of normal and abnormal anatomy, blood flow patterns, and the effects of various treatment options
  • Suggested readings appear at the end of each chapter for more in-depth study
  • Includes coverage of:Excessive pulmonary blood flow, cyanosis, inadequate systemic perfusion, cardiomyopathies, and arrhythmias,Cardiovascular drug therapy,Neurology of congenital heart disease, andPerinatal Cardiovascular Physiology

From The Critics

Finding that the books available devoted to neonatal cardiology were published a decade ago, specialists provide a current reference for neonatologists, pediatric cardiologists, and obstetricians, and a textbook for medical and nursing students. They cover basic aspects of embryology of heart, developmental changes in myocardial contraction and relaxation, and mechanisms involved in circulatory changes after birth; clinical assessment; general principles of treatment, pharmacological aspects of therapy, and managing neonates following surgery for cardiac anomalies; and nursing aspects of the neonate with heart disease by anomalies. The volume is produced to a high standard, just in case the next update is another decade away. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

From The Critics

Reviewer: Jay P. Goldsmith, MD(Tulane University School of Medicine)
Description: This is an update of a concise overview of neonatal cardiology written mostly at the level of the postresidency trainee in cardiology or neonatology. It includes well-written descriptions of embryology and physiology as well as most neonatal cardiac conditions, and gives practical guidance on the evaluation and management of neonates with heart disease. It is not intended to compete with the major textbooks in pediatric cardiology in terms of in-depth discussion of many aspects of pediatric cardiology. The first edition was published in 2002.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a succinct overview of neonatal cardiology for clinicians and trainees. The second edition brings readers up to date on many of the nonsurgical approaches to neonatal heart disease that have become standard practice over the last decade. The authors meet their objective, especially for trainees in this area.
Audience: The book is intended for neonatologists, cardiologists, and obstetricians. Because of the concise system complex approach, it will appeal mostly to trainees at the postresidency level and to neonatologists. The authors are respected authorities in the field and the foreword is written by Abraham Rudolph, one of the grandfathers of this area of medicine.
Features: The first of the book's four major sections deals with embryology and physiology and is followed by a section on clinical assessment. The third section covers general principles of treatment, and the final chapters deal with neurologic, epidemiologic, and genetic aspects of congenital heart disease. The illustrations are superb, with many full-color presentations and very clear radiographs and echocardiographic images. The section on postoperative care is fairly basic and, overall, the references are somewhat disappointing, with a short list of suggested readings at the end of each chapter and no numeric annotations of specific references when documentation is called for in the text.
Assessment: This is a well-written and concise book which has been needed to update the first edition published nearly a decade ago. It is well suited for the advanced trainee to use clinically and prepare for board exams. It is not as detailed as the standard pediatric cardiology textbooks (Nadas' Pediatric Cardiology, 2nd edition, Keane et al. (Elsevier, 2006)), but it presents the essentials in a very readable and beautifully illustrated manner.
