Reviewer:Michael Joel Schrift, D.O., M.A.(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description:This is an excellent new book covering the rapidly growing focus of study into how abnormalities in the development of the central nervous system can influence or produce psychopathology. The book is a compilation of papers derived from presentations given at a conference on this topic at Emory University in 1999. Written and edited by internationally recognized experts in the field, this book is a valuable contribution to psychiatry.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the current research in developmental neuroscience. The editors hope that the "insights (from the book) will inspire other investigators to take up the challenge." The editors and chapter authors have succeeded in producing a wonderful exploration of this most interesting field.
Audience:The intended audience is researchers in developmental neuroscience. Researchers who study schizophrenia, autistic disorder, personality, and mood disorders will find this book invaluable.
Features:The book features 558 pages divided into four parts with a total 21 chapters. Part 1 includes such topics as basic mechanisms in prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal neurodevelopmental processes with important chapters on neurobehavioral teratology and neurodevelopmental aspects of schizophrenia. Part 2 reviews animal models of developmental psychopathology. Part 3 covers genetic and environmental influences on brain development and the implications for psychopathology. Part 4 focuses on specific syndromes such as personality disorders, childhood depression, maternal depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and psychotic disorders. Each chapter contains relevant and timely references and the index section is very user friendly.
Assessment:This is a very interesting and valuable new book summarizing the state of research on the neurodevelopmental underpinnings of psychopathology. Any researcher or interested clinician in psychiatry and neurology would broaden their knowledge base by reading this book.
