Reviewer:Michael J. Bamdad, MA, CCC-SLP(George Washington University)
Description:This is a basic neuroscience book that reviews the various systems and discusses them as they relate to communication disorders.
Purpose:The purpose is to teach students neuroscience in a clear and organized fashion. It is geared as a semester long graduate level text. These are extrememly worthy objectives that are adequately met with this book.
Audience:The book is geared towards graduate level students, both according to the author and in my judgment as well.
Features:The book methodically covers all the systems involved in neuroscience and communication disorders. Strengths of the book include its abundant and well produced illustrations that add to the clarity of the presentation. Also, the author creatively discusses the relationships between neuroscience and communication disorders.
Assessment:This book is extremely useful and much needed. The author has presented each system clearly. Especially helpful are the easily manageable illustrations. The second edition is warranted as it provides better illustrations and inlcudes an additional section providing students review questions. The questions are helpful and well formulated . The list of medical abbreviations adds to the book's utility as a learning tool. I can strongly recommend this book.
