Overview
A big fat dictionary in which both Spanish learners and second- language speakers of it can find most any word they are likely to run across or want to use. Distinctions are made between European and American versions in both English and Spanish. Supporting material includes Spanish pronunciation, English grammar, irregular verbs, and weights and measures.Annotation Β© Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Criticas
Presented in a user-friendly format, this bilingual dictionary contains the usual ancillary sections with basic pronunciation and grammatical guidelines for both languages. However, English definitions tend toward British idiomatic uses that may be unfamiliar to American readers. "Special attention to Latin American Spanish" is promised, but the coverage of regional dialect distinctions is inconsistent. For example, pileta, "swimming pool" in Argentina, is marked with the collective term "Am," which stands for "meaning in Latin America," while the entry for alberca, the most common term for "swimming pool" in Mexican and therefore much of U.S. Spanish, omits this designation. Finally, the English entry for "swimming pool" gives only the Peninsular Spanish piscina. Although serviceable as a resource for the student of Spanish or English who needs more depth than a pocket dictionary can provide, this volume would not be the best investment for a library on a limited budget. Pocket, Spanish-only editions are also available from Oc ano. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.Book Details
