Children's Literature

Nez Perce is part of the "Tribes of Native America" series. This book describes the history, daily life, and customs of the Nez Perce people. This book is clear and provides a vast amount of information that is perfect for research projects or school reports. The many color pictures are well-placed throughout the text to help readers visualize the information. There is also a timeline of important events in the Nez Perce history, along with a map of where the Nez Perce tribes live, and a graph depicting the population of the tribe throughout the years. The list of notable people, sources for more information, glossary, and index complete the book as well as providing needed research tools. For the most part the information is well presented. However, as a result of subjects being grouped together, some readers might get confused between the information of the history of the tribe verses the modern life of the tribe. If this is the case, the book The Nez Perce Tribe by Allison Lassieur would be a better choice. Lassieur separates the subjects but simplifies the text for younger readers. 2002, Blackbirch Press, Ages 8 to 12.
