Overview

Examines Nietzsche's complex attitudes toward religion and his understanding of how particular religions and deities affect the intellectual, moral, and spiritual lives of their various proselytes and adherents.

Synopsis

Eleven essays examine Neitzsche's attitudes regarding the Christian God, the Jewish God (Yahweh), the Greek gods (especially Apollo and Dionysus), and the Buddha. Nietzsche's views of religious thinkers of his own time and his influence on later religious thought (particularly that of Buber and Tillich) are also discussed. The contributors are religious scholars and philosophers from the United States and Europe.
