Synopsis

Presents the natural environment and resources, people and culture, and business and economy of Nigeria, focusing on development and change in recent years.

School Library Journal

Gr 5-7-This book reveals how Nigeria's great potential remains elusive despite its rich natural resources and dynamic culture. The focus, however, is on recent development and change, with little coverage given to significant historical factors leading to the country's underdevelopment. They include the slave trade, colonization, Britain's exportation of natural resources, and government corruption. The book succeeds at presenting a look at the current status of Nigeria's socioeconomic infrastructure, industry, health care, and educational system. There is interesting discussion of the steps the country is taking to overcome its troubled past; sidebars include interviews with a variety of individuals. The book features generous color photographs and an eye-catching layout. With its easy-to-read text, this is a serviceable title for reports. Anne Rosenberg's Nigeria: The People (Crabtree, 2000) offers more historical background.-Ajoke' T. I. Kokodoko, Oakland Public Library, CA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
