Children's Literature
An introductory first page tells the reader that some animals are awake at night and sleep during the day. This nonfiction book provides photographs of these animals along with a short verse that gives some facts about each animal. The short verses are written in easy words and sentences appropriate for the early reader. A Did you know? insert contains additional interesting facts. One page explains to parents some of the ways that they can help their children gain confidence in reading, such as talking about the pictures, finding the rhyming words, and making up questions to answer after reading. The last pages of the book contain a quiz with the answers, a dictionary page, and a page with key words and examples of short sentences. On the border of the page are words from the story with the suggestion that children use these words to make up new sentences. The verses are fun to read, the basic information is interesting, and the suggestions for ways to help children read are excellent. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
