Overview

This volume presents, in an integrated framework, contemporary perspectives on the role of nonverbal behavior in psychological regulation, adaptation, and psychopathology, and includes both empirical and theoretical research that is central to our understanding of the reciprocal influences between nonverbal behavior, psychopathology, and therapeutic processes. It has several objectives: One is to present fundamental theories and data relevant to researchers and clinicians working in such fields as psychopathology and psychotherapy. Another objective is to link contributions of basic research to clinical applications. Finally, the volume gathers contributions in different sub-fields that are rarely presented jointly, such as brain damage and non-verbal skills.

Synopsis

The anthology is an outgrowth of an ongoing exchange program between the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. Psychology scholars from there and elsewhere in the US and Europe offer contemporary views on the role of nonverbal behavior in psychological regulation, adaptation, and psychopathology. Their empirically grounded work and theories address nonverbal behavior in regulatory and clinical processes, in negative life events, and in specific clinical disorders. Reviewer:Nicholas Greco IV, MS, BCETS, CATSM(Abbott Laboratories)
Description:This book successfully presents the more current research involving nonverbal behavior in an attempt to understand how both the various aspects of psychopathology and the therapeutic process are affected.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide the reader with current, applicable research from leading international scholars to set a foundation for knowledge in the use of nonverbal behavior to measure and potentially modify the feelings and behavior of their patients. These are worthy objectives and are, for the most part, met.
Audience:It is clearly intended for practicing clinical psychologists and advanced graduate students. The editors and authors are credible members of the mental health field and have substantial knowledge in the area of nonverbal behavior.
Features:The book provides a solidly written introduction and overview of the role of nonverbal behavior in clinical settings. The book is divided into the three parts. Part one discusses the nonverbal behavior in regulatory and clinical processes, part two discusses nonverbal behavior in negative life events, and part three discusses nonverbal behavior in specific clinical disorders. I especially enjoyed part three which focused on depression, schizophrenia, alcoholism, and autism. The illustrations are clear, and the index is helpful.
Assessment:My only concern is that, while this book offers a high quality contribution to the field and the authors are quite knowledgeable, the emphasis in mental health has been on psychopharmacological treatment with less than impressive acknowledgement of other treatment options/additions available. Overall, this is a worthwhile read and deserves a fair evaluation by those in the field. In addition, this book may help to enlighten a number of individuals in the field looking for other options and willing to try them.
