Overview

It seems Peter Kuiksak's star just keeps rising. This young hockey hero from the Northwest Territories is the top player in his league, being pursued by agents, and becoming something of a celebrity in his adopted city, Edmonton. But being the centre of attention isn't all it's cracked up to be. It seems no one sees Peter as just Peter anymore—least of all the star himself. Inspired by the career of NHL star Jordin Tootoo, Northern Star continues one exceptional player's journey, started in Roughing and Against the Boards, toward hockey greatness.

"Sure to appeal to young hockey players, with its insights into the challenges boys face working their way through the minor leagues to the NHL, as well as readers who have already met Peter in the first two books, ... it does a fine job of presenting an authentic hockey setting and situation."

Children's Literature - Renee Farrah

Peter Kuiksak is working on achieving his dream of becoming an NHL star. He works hard in school and even harder on the ice, which is fine until he starts getting articles written about him in the paper. As his hockey skills improve and buzz about his future potential grows, members on the team, and even his own family, are getting fed up hearing about Peter's continued success. Peter begins to worry that achieving his dream will only push those he cares about further away. However instead of getting depressed and letting jeers from crowds and teammates affect him, he remains calm and tries his best. Instead of telling everyone how well he did, he tells others how well the team did and draws attention to his supporters, which gains their trust back. This is a strong story about friendship, family, perseverance, and focus. Part of the "Sports Stories" series, the first half of the book is very hockey-oriented which may be difficult for non-hockey fans to understand. Reviewer: Renee Farrah
