Percy gave 12 school-aged children living in a homeless shelter cameras, told them to take pictures of whatever was special to them, and interviewed them in depth about the photographs. She found that the younger children describe playing and being with special people as most important, and that the older pre- adolescents want to be cared for and have a stable relationship with significant others. She shows how they find resources to cope with the same issues that all children face. The photos are not included. Revised from a 1994 Ph.D. dissertation for the University of South Carolina.
