Hurrah for a book that breaks mom-dad working stereotypes and has fun in the process! Ketteman features an enthusiastic preschooler and her work-at-home father who prepares for the Mom's birthday. Yvette's mother works in an office so the father and daughter have an entire day focused on their surprise. Yvette's father fosters her participation in cake making, house decoration, present choice, and even selection of paper products. It's difficult to say who has more fun-the surprised mother, the involved father, or the child who is caught in a day of showing love and being loved at the same time.

PreS-K-- A simply stated picture book about an African-American family's birthday celebration. It's Yvette's mother's birthday, and the child and her father are vacuuming, dusting, baking, shopping, and decorating. The excitement of planning and preparation makes the youngster quite anxious, and Dad is constantly saying, ``Not yet, Yvette.'' The illustrations are uneven. Full-page spreads appear static, and some illustrations of the characters exhibit cartoonlike stylism. The text and illustrations do not set a mood of gentle patience but rather one of annoyance, and the repetitive ``Not yet, Yvette'' becomes quite obnoxious.
