Library Journal
Magill's, a line well known for its literature studies material, now adds this three-volume set on African American writers to its fine repertoire. Each of its 80 signed essays is arranged alphabetically by writer's last name and runs four to eight pages. Each writer's genre (e.g. fiction, poetry) is identified, and, as expected, each essay includes an "Achievement," "Biography," and "Analysis" section and concludes with an annotated bibliography. A comprehensive bibliography is found near the back of the final volume. Most of the essays (about 68) were adapted from Salem Press's various "Critical Survey" series in long fiction, short fiction, poetry, drama, and mystery and detective fiction. This, however, should not be a deterrent to purchasing the set, as it makes available in one convenient location updated articles and bibliographies. Also of note is the set's variety of worthy indexes, divvied up for the patron's convenience by genre, personages, title, or subject index. Bottom Line This work is possibly unnecessary for those on a tight budget already owning the second edition of The Norton Anthology of African American Literature. However, its overall quality makes it absolutely appropriate for libraries collecting the Magill's series and material related to African American writers and literature. Recommended for college, high school, and public libraries.-Lura Sanborn, St. Paul's Sch. Lib., NH Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.Book Details
