From The Critics
Reviewer: Philip D. Ogden, MD(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)Description: This is the fourth edition of a book that debuted in 1969 and was last updated in 1987. The books gives in-depth coverage of respiratory physiology and then guides the application of that knowledge in clinical practice.
Purpose: Dr. Nunn's purpose, as in the original edition, is to translate knowledge of respiratory physiology into a form that is useful and accessible to clinical practice. Thorough chapters on basic physiology are updated where needed. New areas explored in this edition include a study of Earth's atmosphere, lung transplantation, and pulmonary physiology in outer space.
Audience: Dr. Nunn reaches his target audience of practicing anesthesiologists and intensivists and writes each chapter as a thorough and concise summary of a subject that can be read independently from the rest of the book.
Features: Most of the many illustrations consist of simple schematic line drawings and graphs that convey their messages efficiently. Six useful appendixes detail units of measure, gas laws, mathematical functions, nomograms, and the like. References are noted parenthetically in the text by author and date; an alphabetical list of references and further reading precedes the index.
Assessment: This work of a respected author conveys a complex subject with clarity of prose and illustration. This latest edition updates what has been a standard text of respiratory physiology.
