Drawing on interviews with policy makers, employers, older nurses and other stakeholders about the employment decisions of nurses aged over 50, this topical report looks at what encourages older nurses either to stay in the NHS or to leave.Nurses over 50: ·[vbTab]assesses the measures aimed at addressing the shortage of nurses and exposes the gap between policy rhetoric and practical reality;·[vbTab]explores the options, decisions and outcomes for nurses over 50 as a means of shedding light on aspects of employment transitions more generally;· argues that current measures fail to recognise the role that older nurses could play in the NHS and provides recommendations for policy and practice.Transitions after 50 seriesPeople are living longer, yet increasingly are leaving working life well before the state retirement age.
