Reviewer:Susan Marie Eley, PhD, MS, RN, FNP-BC(Indiana State University)
Description:This is a good reference for nursing professionals and/or students to commonly used diagnostic tests. It manages to be organized and comprehensive without being verbose.
Purpose:The book provides accurate descriptions of diagnostic testing commonly used in the patient care setting. The discussion is well organized, noting the purpose for the tests, the procedural considerations along with the pre- and post-procedure/testing considerations, reference values, abnormal values with potential rationales, and cautionary notes or tips.
Audience:This would be appropriate for nursing or other healthcare students, residents, nurse practitioner or physician assistant students, or healthcare providers. The authors are all RNs; including a medical technologist from the laboratory setting might have been helpful.
Features:Testing of blood and body fluids is covered, as are procedures that assist in determining patient condition, diagnosis, and management. This comprehensive book even covers SARS testing and includes a well done section on sexual assault testing; it is the only book that addresses celiac disease. It also includes current information on bioterrorism infectious agent testing. The drug challenge component is a nice addition. The book could have had more information on STI testing and collection of vaginal pool specimens, particularly for nurse practitioner or physician assistant programs.
Assessment:This comprehensive guide most likely would be used by nursing and mid-level students more readily than Portable Diagnostic Tests (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2008) or Diagnostic Tests Made Incredibly Easy, 2nd edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2009), which are clearly aimed at an undergraduate level.
