Purpose: The purpose is to offer nursing students a thorough, organized, and practical approach to content delivery and skill mastery. According to the author, the client is the focus of the book with a holistic perspective that encourages the nursing student to see each person with potential for health promotion and wellness, in addition to the needed focus on disease prevention and management across all levels of care. Case studies at the end of each chapter provide practical scenarios for application and synthesis of concepts. The worthy objectives are met by the author.
Audience: The audience consists of students enrolled in a program designed to educate registered nurses at either the associate or baccalaureate levels. The author is a credible authority.
Features: The book is divided into two major sections: foundations of nursing and nursing of human function. The foundations of nursing section addresses the foundations of practice, the nursing process, decision making process, client care across the life span, arenas of care, leadership, and concepts of therapeutic nursing. The nursing of human function addresses health-perception, health-maintenance, nutritional-metabolic issues, elimination, activity-exercise issues, sleep-rest issues, cognitive perceptual issues, self-perception, self-concept, role relationships, sexuality- reproductive issues, coping with stress and value belief issues. Strategically placed boxes highlight important points throughout on topics such as client education, focus on wellness, legal-ethical issues and community-home care issues. Chapter competencies are placed at the beginning of each one with review questions, learning activities, multimedia links, web resources, and reference at the end.
