Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: Miyong Kim, PhD(Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing)Description: The editor and contributors of this book comprehensively cover topics related to nursing research, focusing on essentials for understanding and conducting nursing research. They also explore a variety of associated research issues as well as related computer and technical aspects.
Purpose: The editor's intention is to provide a comprehensive yet succinct overview of all key concepts, terms, and methods in nursing research. Through this book, she achieves this goal beautifully.
Audience: The target audience includes educators, undergraduate and graduate nursing students, and clinicians. I am not sure if this book would be useful for clinicians lacking a research background.
Features: An overview of each major type of nursing research, research constructs, methodological issues, and topics related to nursing research (such as doctoral education, health policy, research utilization, and careers in research) are all covered. The most well-covered chapter is the methods section, while the least well covered section is computer end technical issues.
Assessment: The book is definitely a worthwhile reference. As a mini-version of the larger Encyclopedia of Nursing Research (Springer Publishing Company, 1998) by the same editor, this book is a quick review of key nursing research issues and applications. The contributors are well established and respected researchers. The quality of each chapter is generally very good, although I found some sections in which a topic is covered too superficially and where the most updated advancements in the area are omitted. The publisher may need to plan subsequent editions since this type of reference requires frequent updates to reflect the most current developments in the field.
