Purpose: The purpose is to provide a foundation for understanding qualitative research. This is certainly a useful purpose in light of the increasing focus on qualitative research in nursing.
Audience: The target audience is nurses and nursing students interested in qualitative research. The author and contributors are qualitative researchers.
Features: The first of the book's three sections deals with the fundamentals of qualitative research. Three new chapters cover the landscape of qualitative research, historical and philosophical foundations of qualitative research, and contemporary philosophies as related to qualitative research. Part II deals with the more prevalent qualitative methods and an exemplar for each method. New authors have written these chapters. Part III covers essential issues related to conducting qualitative research. Six new authors have contributed to this section.
Assessment: This book should be valuable to the target audience. The author recommends that the older editions of this book should not be discarded. This fourth edition provides a complete foundation for qualitative research.
