Synopsis

Aimed at undergraduate and graduate students, this text traces the evolution of nursing theory from its roots in the ideas of Florence Nightingale through theories developed in the last few years. Each chapter describes a particular theory and then explains how it is applied in nursing practice, research, education, and administration. Many of the chapters have been written by the theorists themselves, while others offer insights from nurses who use them in their daily practice. Parker teaches nursing at Florida Atlantic U. Reviewer:Vicki Ann Moss, DNSc, MS, BSN, RN(University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)
Description:The authors discuss nursing theory and its relationship to practice, research, administration, and education. They demonstrate how theory guides all nursing endeavors including communication between patients, colleagues, students, and other health professionals.
Purpose:The purpose of this book is to honor nurse theorists and those nurses who use theory in their day-to-day practice by reflecting on the contributions of the great nurse thinkers and doers throughout history.
Audience:This book is written for baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral students to assist them in understanding the various nursing theories and ways they can be used in practice and scholarship. It is also written for nurses who want to enhance their knowledge of theory.
Features:The book is divided into four sections: 1) Perspectives on Nursing Theory; 2) Evolution of Nursing Theory: Essential Influences; 3) Nursing Theory in Nursing Practice; Education, Research, and Administration; and 4) Nursing Theory: Illustrating Processes of Development. Many theorists wrote their own chapters or chose persons to write that are experts in their particular theory. Each chapter begins with an outline and ends with a summary. The pattern for each chapter was selected by individual authors to provide freedom for their particular writing style. In general, however, each author introduces the theorist, the theory and then discusses its use in practice, research, education and/or administration. An instructor's manual is also available.
Assessment:Thisis an excellent reference for any nurse who wants to explore more about a certain theorist or theory. Each chapter could stand alone which makes it an interesting and easy read. An especially worthwhile portion is the discussion of the application of each theory to research, practice, education and/or administration. New chapters include "Technological Competency as Caring and the Practice of Knowing Persons as Whole" and "Developing a Model for Community Nursing Practice." It has something for everyone.
