Description: This is an update of a book that reviews the basics of nutrition, special nutrition needs for critical portions of the life span, and nutrition for chronic disease states. It meets the need to update the 2003 edition in light of the changes in the U.S. nutritional requirements and guidelines.
Purpose: The aim is to distill the central concepts of undergraduate basic human nutrition, nutrition through the life span, and clinical nutrition into an abridged text for use by health professionals not majoring in nutrition or dietetics. Although the book is easy to read and fact filled, the process of abridging the material compromises the completeness of some of the discussions of controversial subjects in nutrition.
Audience: According to the author, the book was written for those in the healthcare professions in general, but it appears directed more toward nursing students and practitioners. The author is a registered dietitian and the content has been reviewed by faculty from several of the smaller U.S. programs in dietetics.
Features: The book provides broad coverage of human nutrition in a simple and direct manner that is understandable by non-nutrition majors. The chapters include useful, but modest quality, color and black-and-white pictures and drawings, and useful summary tables. Each chapter includes teaching and learning aims as well a critical thinking problem. Appendixes include related web sites, diet exchange lists, a well organized food nutrient table, growth charts, and a large glossary. A CD for Mosby's Nutritrac nutrition analysis software is also included. The references are adequate, but the citations are only through 2005 and some are in difficult to find journals, while some outstanding reviews are not cited.
Assessment: This book meets its goal of condensing a large amount of information into a small book. In so doing, however, some of the discussion of important critical controversial subjects does not fully inform a novice in nutrition. Similarly, the handling of nutrition in chronic disease, while providing a useful introduction, will not fully inform the future health professional. Although it meets its goals with respect to length and price, the book is not as complete as some of the others in the field.
