School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-McMillan examines the causes and health consequences of and treatment options for obesity. Marked by a more sophisticated vocabulary than is usual for a short introductory volume, his presentation is somewhat dry and makes some assumption of prior knowledge of medical terminology, e.g., endrocrine dysfunction, pituitary deficiency. The author is careful to distinguish between what is opinion and what can be supported by research. Charts and graphs are included, but there are no illustrations to break up the text. The text deals less with possible emotional causes and implications than do other titles about eating disorders. Better suited for reports than for self-help.-Lois McCulley, Wichita Falls High School, TX
