Overview

Sophie Katz's relationship with the irresistible and occasionally insufferable P.I. Anatoly Darinsky is on the fritz when a friend recruits Sophie's investigation skills to decode her possibly two-timing husband's strange behavior. When Sophie shows up in a short, red cocktail dress and her friend's hubby winds up dead, the loveable would-be sleuth can't help but take on the job.

Suddenly plunged into a crazy world of campaign mudslinging, dirt-digging and cover-ups, Sophie begins to uncover some pretty dirty secrets indeed—involving a conservative congressional hopeful's involvement in the Furry community, a group of people who dress up in mascot-size stuffed animal costumes. Sex and politics, wouldn't you know?

Way in over her head as usual, Sophie reluctantly—or not-so-reluctantly—enlists the help of her two-time sidekick and ex—Anatoly. Together they set out to determine who killed Eugene and why, and in the process can't resist falling for each other—again?

About the Author, Kyra Davis

Kyra Davis was born in the San Francisco Bay Area where, with the exception of a brief stint in New York, she has spent her entire life. Like her protagonist, Kyra has a Jewish mother of Eastern European descent and her father was African-American. She often considers herself to be something of a one-woman Benetton ad. She majored in business and humanities at Golden Gate University and, after graduating with her bachelor's degree, began a career in fashion merchandising and marketing. At age 27 Kyra gave birth to a wonderful son and stayed home with him for the first 18 months of his life. During her hiatus from work she managed to spend just enough quality time with her husband to motivate her to file for divorce. As a single mother on the verge of bankruptcy, Kyra felt it was irresponsible to drown her sorrows in Cosmopolitans so she drowned them in Frappucinos and writing instead. The Frappucinos (complimented by a healthy dose of anxiety) lead to insomnia, which lead to more writing time and it wasn't long before she realized that she had found her calling. Two years later Kyra had an agent, a finished manuscript and bids from two New York publishing houses. She joyfully signed with Red Dress Ink for two contracts and a total of four books. She feels the secret to living a happy life is to pursue your passions and learn from your mistakes, which is why she has quit her day job to become a full-time writer and will only spend quality time with her son, her friends...and Juan Valdez.

Publishers Weekly

Sophie Katz flirts with dirty politics and a certain Russian PI in Davis's cool but sometimes overcaffeinated third chick lit cozy (after 2006's Passion, Betrayal and Killer Highlights). A simple favor for Sophie's college mentor Melanie O'Reilly turns into an investigation after Melanie's husband, former FBI agent Eugene, is killed in a drive-by shooting. Sophie teams with ex-lover boy Anatoly Darinsky, a licensed San Francisco PI, to crack the case. Eugene had been working as a crackerjack researcher for Flynn Fitzgerald, a conservative Republican running against liberal Democrat Anne Brooke in a hotly contested congressional race. As the killer begins stalking Sophie, she discovers one of the candidates is connected to "the dark underbelly of the furry world" inhabited by fetishists who dress up in animal costumes and get it on with stuffed toys. Wry sociopolitical commentary, the playful romantic negotiations between Anatoly and Sophie and plenty of Starbucks coffee keep this steamy series chugging along. (Sept.)

Library Journal

Mystery writer and amateur detective Sophie Katz (Sex, Murder and a Double Latte) must determine whether her former mentor's campaign manager husband has been unfaithful, but when he is gunned down, Sophie's investigation leads her into some dirty and dangerous politics. Unfortunately, the heavy focus on Sophie's relationship with her ex-boyfriend overshadows the mystery. Buy only where Davis's books and chick-lit mysteries are popular.
