Description:This is the second edition of a book that provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment information necessary to properly treat a wide range of ocular disorders. The first edition was published in 1998.
Purpose:According to the authors, the purpose is to provide a comprehensive and succinct manual for busy healthcare providers who need to quickly diagnosis and treat ocular disorders. This is a very important and lofty ambition and the authors did a superb job.
Audience:This is a valuable manual for any clinician who treats disorders of the eye or related to vision. The authors are all well known experts in the field of ocular therapeutics and hold academic appointments.
Features:The book begins with a well-written quick reference section that provides important background information on the related areas of microbiology, pharmacology and lab testing. The bulk of the book lists detailed information for each ocular disorder. These are neatly organized and include specific background information and etiologies of the various disorders. Next, commonly presenting patient symptoms, history and clinical signs are discussed. Each section then concludes with a discussion on the appropriate ancillary testing and recommended treatment options. Each disorder is organized for quick and easy access and includes diagnostic ICD-9 codes for managed care patients. A differential diagnosis section for the various disorders would have been helpful.
Assessment:This is a wonderful and highly portable manual filled with helpful guidance in treating ocular disorders. Other books provide the same information, but this one is the most current and contains a broader range of useful information than most. Every healthcare provider who treats eye conditions should have this manual handy. It will soon become the most used book in the office!

This edition has been completely revised and is now even quicker to use on the go thanks to the outline format and use of algorithms. Color photos have been added to greatly enhance the content. Updates in ocular and systemic medications are also greatly appreciated.
