Overview

This book provides the general reader with an understanding of competing perspectives necessary to evaluate several aspects of black popular culture, multiculturalism, racial prejudice, politics, Affirmative Action, social justice, and the varied lives of African American leaders. Further, the book teaches us that black artists and scholars must take control of their ability to tell and write about African Americans. Finally, the book explores ways in which blacks can transcend race and an identity of victimization and grievance. Ultimately, should African Americans embrace a new black aesthetic or a practical means to solve our intellectual scholarship and race-relation problems, either in the academia or every sector of our society?
