Synopsis

Nona Cinrad has been making it throught "by the hardest." Each day is a struggle--to go on after her parents' sudden death, to win her rightful inheritance from her untrustworthy half-brother, and to raise her high-spirited younger sister. Hired to manage a fishing camp deep in the Arkansas woods, the strong-willed redhead is eager to settle down...until she clashes with two men. One is a mysterious, well-dressed stranger who seems to know her. The other is the camp's new owner, Simon Wright. Straightforward and self-assured, Simon has his own reason for dogging her steps, and he isn't prepared for the instant attraction drawing him too close to Nona. While she decides whether Simon is an ally or a charmer with his own agenda, someone driven by greed will do anything to find out what she knows...and an unsuspected enemy plots to make sure that Nona and Simon will have nowhere to run.

Publishers Weekly

Garlock's 50th novel is a delightful treasure set in seemingly tranquil Home, Ark., in 1980. Nona Conrad has moved her 14-year-old sister, Maggie, and her friend Mabel Rogers to Tall Pine Lake to spend the summer managing an isolated lakeside fishing camp. But as soon as sexy Simon Wright arrives and announces he's purchased the run-down camp, the sleepy outpost becomes a hotbed of thievery, kidnapping and murder. Chicago-based thugs Frank and Webb descend on the camp to retrieve a mysterious package that Nona's wayward brother mailed to her, bringing with them an overdose of violent mayhem. The husband of pregnant camper LeAnn Leasure ends up dead in the lake, two characters are kidnapped (separately), beatings are rampant and two other characters take a dirt-nap as the narrative builds to an edge-of-your-easy-chair thriller that romantic suspense junkies will not want to pass up.
