On the Ball is the fourth Yossi and Laibel book, and is as charming and appealing as the previous volumes. The rhyming text tells the story of brothers Yossi and Laibel and how they and their friends learn to accept a handicapped boy as an equal when he replaces the pitcher in their baseball game. This picture book is appropriate for pre-school to second grade children.

Children are often quick to judge other by their outer appearance. Avi has a very visible difference -- he gets around in a wheelchair. Yossi and Laibel accept Avi for who he is by giving him a chance to play with them. The boys then invite him to join them and their friends for a ball game in the park. The two brothers convince their friends not to judge Avi by what he looks like, but to give him a chance for who he is. Norman Nodel's artwork is a perfect showcase for Dina Rosenfeld's sensitive and charming story. Yossi & Laibel On the Ball will delight young readers ages 3 to 7. These brothers have a following, having been introduced to readers in three precious books, the funniest of which was the first Labels for Laibel when quarreling about space and ownership in their shared bedroom led Laibel to label all of his and his brother possessions. Told in the author's signature rhyme, and illustrated in bright colors and semi-cartoon style, the brothers' dilemma this time is whether or not to allow their new wheel chair- bound neighbor, a boy their age, to play baseball with them-and ultimately to play on their baseball team. Fortunately, the boy turns out to be a whiz of a pitcher and pitches the team to victory. O.K., the mitzvot is that it is not what is outside that counts, but what is inside - but what if the disabled child had no child-attracting skills, what then? Well that is the question parents and teachers might pose afterwards. This will be a fine book to use with younger grades.
