Children's Literature

Today farms in the United States use a lot of big machines. Kids have an opportunity to learn about several and what their functions are. One of the most useful and common machines is a tractor. The tractor is designed to pull a number of other machines. For example, a plow is attached to break up the soil so that the field will be ready for planting. The picture shows the hitch pin, a device that lets various machines be hitched up to the tractor. After the soil is prepared a seed drill is used to make the holes in the soil at the proper intervals and to drop in seeds. For a crop like hay, the next machine might be a mower, which cuts the grass. When it has dried a baler is attached and the hay is shaped into a bundle called a bale. The bales are then picked up and stored. The last spread shows a trailer attached to the tractor loaded with hay and carrots. In addition to the machines and their shiny parts other actions are taking place in several of the scenes. Also the color of the tractor changes so there is an opportunity to extend learning using the equipment and also the page borders. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

Kirkus Reviews

This onesizefitsnone adaptation of a series for older children (Amazing Machines, with Tony Mitton) takes a promising topic and complicates it. Shiny foil accents the machines, which are driven by cheery cartoon animals to an onomatopoeic accompaniment: "rumble! rumble!" Parts of the machines receive diagrammatic treatment (cab, mirror, blade, hitch pin), making for an overbusy composition, and a sentence glosses its use in terms beyond the ken of most in the boardbook audience: "A plow breaks up the soil to get a field ready for planting." Too much for most toddlers, but not quite enough for most preschoolers-not too surprising, given its origins. Other titles include On the Go (9780753462621), Hard at Work (9780753462638) and Racing Along (9780753462652). (1836 mos.)
